The Trout Lake Learning Center

The Trout Lake Learning Center offers unique educational experiences designed to educate individuals in the areas of outdoor activities, lifestyle and stewardship. With courses tailored to specific areas and taught by experts, you can improve your knowledge and appreciation of the world around you. Learning new and interesting skills allows you to better enjoy the time you spend outdoors and better prepares you to protect these resources for your children. Located just 26 km northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario, the Trout Lake Learning Center boasts 75 acres of pristine wilderness and 750 feet of waterfront access on Trout Lake. Our facilities are perfectly suited for a hands-on, practical experience with any course we offer.

 Announcement:

During the coming months the Trout Lake Learning Center is please to announce that it will be undertaking two environmental projects.

  (1) We have received NOFC  funding to hire an intern to do McIntyre Superior Rainbow Study The goal of the study is to enhance to overall environmental quality of the McIntyre River system, including the protection and development of urban fisheries by discovering the cause of the decline in the numbers of rainbow trout returning to Trout Lake via the McIntyre River to spawn.

We have hired for a Study Director and will be introduced at a Press conference on December 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. .  This is a year-long contract position scheduled to commence in January 2008.

(2) The second program is to collect data on the types of birds that either reside or visit the Lake Superior basin  between  November 11th 2007 and March 31st 2008.

 Lake Superior Bird Survey

Bird watchers will be encouraged to list the birds they see into an online data base.  This searchable data base will allow visitors to the website to search to see what other birds have been entered and the location where they were seen and the date.

The success of both programs are dependant on the support of the public.   The bird data and its results will be discussed at a public meeting at the Trout Lake Learning Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday May 10, 2008

The McIntyre Superior Rainbow Study, will  be released at a public meeting in November 2008 and it is expected that before then at least one public meeting will be held to provide opportunities for the pubic to provide information to the study director and the study advisory board.

To submit a bird you have seen or to check out what birds other have seen
